Ipswich Town legend Mick Mills has stressed the importance of the late equaliser his former side scored in their 1-1 draw against Leicester City at Portman Road on Boxing Day.

The Blues scored a late equaliser at home to earn a vital point against the league leaders on Tuesday.

Ipswich were coming into the game on the back of a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Leeds United at Elland Road and were desperate to avoid a second defeat on the trot.

At regulation time it seemed Leicester were going to walk away with all three points but Ipswich mustered an equaliser to get something from the game.

Mills stressed the importance of the point as he feels two defeats on the trot coupled with their failure to beat Norwich City earlier this month would have been a major blow to the confidence of Kieran McKenna’s team.

With an easier run of fixtures lined up next, the Ipswich legend insisted that the players will now go into those games high on confidence.

Mills said on BBC Radio Suffolk: “They would have known that had they lost two games on the trot after failing to get the three points at Norwich, it would have taken its toll.

“What on paper looks like the easier line-up of the next three or four games, we would have gone in there feeling a bit low and that’s how you don’t want to be approaching matches.

“And this one equaliser at the death against the league leaders just changed the whole scenario completely.

“The players will now feel absolutely on top of the world; they haven’t won the game but it will make them feel really good.”

Ipswich will be at home again on Friday night when they will host Queens Park Rangers.
