Tony Mowbray is emerging as a very strong candidate to become the new Birmingham City manager after holding talks with Blues, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Blues are without a manager after ending their Wayne Rooney experiment and are assessing a host of options available.

Former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom is in the mix for the job, while ex-Southampton manager Nathan Jones has also been linked.

Birmingham though have held initial talks with Mowbray and it is claimed he is now emerging as a very strong contender to take over at St Andrew’s.

Mowbray appears to have impressed in talks with Birmingham and put himself in a strong position, not least due to his huge Championship experience.

The experienced manager was lauded for the work he did at Sunderland and there were eyebrows raised when the club sacked him.

Birmingham represent an attractive option for Mowbray to return to the game.

From being in contention for a playoff spot, Birmingham have plunged down the Championship table after Rooney flopped in the hot seat.

Gary Rowett is also under consideration for the job.
