Southampton star Flynn Downes has stated that Saints new boy Joe Rothwell is looking sharp and hailed him as a good player.

The former Manchester United academy player featured eleven times for Bournemouth in the league this season and was a bit part player for Andoni Iraola’s side.

Southampton are strengthening their squad to challenge for an automatic promotion spot and Russell Martin identified Rothwell, who has experience of playing in the Championship, as a good fit.

Saints agreed to a loan deal with Bournemouth to take the midfielder on loan for the rest of the campaign.

After the first training session with Rothwell, Downes pointed out that the Southampton new boy is in good shape and stated that the Bournemouth loanee is a very good player.

“He looks very good, he looks sharp”, Downes told BBC Radio Solent.

“You can tell he’s a good player”

Southampton are only three points behind second-placed Ipswich Town and Martin will be hoping that Rothwell will be able to help them get an automatic promotion spot.
