Everton have scuppered Sheffield United’s bid to sign Mason Holgate on loan by demanding a loan fee late on, according to the Press Association.

Blades boss Chris Wilder wants to add to his backline options and is keen on Holgate, who has been on loan at Southampton.

Holgate struggled for game time on the south coast and Everton were happy to let him join Sheffield United on loan; the defender is not in Sean Dyche’s plans.

Holgate travelled to Sheffield United to undergo a medical in advance of the move – but it has now collapsed.

It is claimed that Everton made a late demand for a loan fee to be paid for Holgate.

And the Toffees’ request has seen the switch collapse.

All eyes will be on whether the deal can be brought back to life, especially as Holgate had headed to Sheffield to undergo a medical.

Everton may be likely to ship Holgate out as he is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park, but whether the Toffees are prepared to accept a deal Sheffield United agree to remains to be seen.
