Newcastle United are only likely to pursue the signature of Atalanta midfielder Ederson in the summer, according to The Athletic.

The 24-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Atalanta in the ongoing winter transfer window.

Some of the Serie A bigwigs have their eyes on him and he has also been on Newcastle’s radar as they seek midfield reinforcements.

It has been claimed that he has an admirer in Steve Nickson, Newcastle’s head of recruitment, on Tyneside but a move this month is unlikely.

Newcastle are only likely to revisit the prospect of signing the Brazilian in the summer transfer window.

Eddie Howe is not keen to bring in a player who is likely to take time to settle and get used to the Premier League.

The Newcastle boss wants a ready-made option and Ederson would likely need time to acclimatise to English football.

Everton’s Amadou Onana and Bournemouth’s Philip Billing have been linked with a move to Newcastle.

Kalvin Phillips has been a top target but Newcastle do not want to meet Manchester City’s financial demands.
