Sunderland are set to put Leo Hjelde through a medical ahead of signing him from Leeds United ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline, according to The Athletic.

The 20-year-old defender joined Leeds from Celtic and has made eight senior appearances for the club.

He has featured just three times this season, only one of them in the Championship and is now set to find the exit door at Elland Road.

It has been claimed that a deal is in place between Sunderland and Leeds for the defender to join the Black Cats.

It will be a permanent transfer and Leeds are happy to let the centre-back join potential promotion rivals in the Championship.

Sunderland are getting ready to put him through a medical while also thrashing out personal terms with the defender’s agent.

Hjelde will soon be in the north east to complete the formalities of the transfer ahead of cutting ties with Leeds.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Rotherham United where he made 13 appearances for the club.

However, he will now look to rekindle his fledgling career on Wearside with Michael Beale’s side.
