Barry Ferguson believes that Rangers winger Ross McCausland has realised that he cannot afford to take his foot off the pedal with the Gers signing Oscar Cortes.
Rangers academy product McCausland has managed to turn some heads with his performances this season and has booked a spot in the Rangers starting line-up.
Despite McCausland performing well for Rangers, Philippe Clement decided to beef up the wing position by signing Cortes from Lens on loan.
Ferguson admitted that McCausland is having an exceptional season by breaking into Clement’s plans and establishing himself as a regular starter.
The ex-Rangers pointed out that with the arrival of Cortes to provide McCausland with competition in the team, the Gers academy star knows that he cannot afford to take anything for granted.
“I know how I felt during my own playing days, when I was still a youngster trying to hold on to my place in the starting 11”, Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column.
“Just when you think you’ve earned your jersey, along come the likes of Claudio Reyna, Tugay and Ronald de Boer just to remind you that you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas.
“That’ll be the case now for Ross McCausland who has done exceptionally well, not just to break his way into the first team but to make himself a regular starter.
“But, from the moment he heard about the interest in Cortes, he’ll have realised he can’t afford to take anything for granted.”
McCausland has featured 15 times for Rangers this season in the league and has won praise for his performances.
