Former Rangers star Steven Thompson has highlighted the importance of John Lundstram in the middle of the park for Philippe Clement’s side.

Lundstram was very good in central midfield again on Tuesday night as Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-1 at Ibrox to move level on points with Celtic in the league table.

The midfielder has again grown in importance under Clement after looking out of sorts under previous Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Thompson admitted that Lundstram’s performance in the middle of the park was pivotal in Rangers’ win over Aberdeen on Tuesday night.

He stressed that he is now a key part of the Rangers team again and his skillset in midfield for Rangers keeps the engine room of the team ticking along in games.

The former Rangers said on BBC Radio Scotland: “I thought John Lundstram played well in the middle of the park.

“For Rangers, he has become a very important member of the team.

“His ball retention, his intelligence off the ball to find space and he keeps things ticking over for Rangers.

“He was very good again this evening.”

It remains to be seen whether Clement decides to rest Lundstram when Rangers take on Ayr in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday.
