Portsmouth centre-back Sean Raggett has insisted that grinding out results away from home is the hallmark of a team aiming to get promoted.

The League One leaders are on a good run of form, winning four of their last five league games and have a six-point lead at the top of the standings.

In the run of games, Portsmouth have ground out 1-0 wins on away trips to Fleetwood Town, Port Vale and Carlisle United.

They did beat Northampton Town 4-1 at home during the run but Raggett stressed the importance of hard-fought wins on the road in the last few weeks.

He insisted that getting those sorts of tough results away from home has to be a tool for any team who are aiming to get promoted to the Championship from League One.

The Portsmouth star told the BBC: “If you look back at previous years, the teams that got promoted you can find a load of those sort of games.

“It was great last weekend to get that comfortable victory against Northampton.

“But we need to go away to places like Carlisle and we need to grind them out like we did.”

Portsmouth have a home game tonight when they will take on Cambridge United at Fratton Park.
