Ipswich Town legend Mick Mills has stressed the importance of Leif Davis to how Kieran McKenna wants his side to play football this season.

Davis scored once and laid on two assists in Ipswich’s 3-2 win over Bristol City at Portman Road on Tuesday night.

A left-back by trade, the 24-year-old has been one of the most effective attacking players in the Championship this term.

He has the most assists to his name this season with 17 and his ability to create goals has been vital in Ipswich sitting second in the Championship table.

Mills stressed that Ipswich do not have another player in the squad who can do what Davis can deliver week-in-week-out for the team.

The Ipswich legend conceded that his importance of McKenna is clear from the fact that he is always in the team when fit and available to play.

Mills said on BBC Radio Suffolk: “Probably there isn’t any sort of alternative to him as far as sort of backup players are concerned.

“He never seems to be left out of the team; he is so crucial to what Kieran McKenna wants to happen.

“He gets a different sort of role.”

Despite the staggering number of assists, the goal against Bristol City was Davis’ first of the season.
