Ipswich Town legend Mick Mills has insisted that Southampton are no longer in the running for automatic promotion in the Championship.

Jeremy Sarmiento scored a 97th-minute goal to help Ipswich grab a big 3-2 win over Southampton at Portman Road on Easter Monday.

The three points kept Ipswich at the top of the Championship standings, but Southampton have lost a lot of ground in the promotion race.

While they have two games in hand, Saints are currently 12 points behind second-placed Leeds United and 13 points behind league leaders Ipswich.

Mills insisted that it is now a three-horse race between Ipswich, Leeds and Leicester for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

He indicated that Southampton are no longer fighting to break into the top two of the Championship.

The Ipswich Town legend said on BBC Radio Suffolk: “Pretty much the first thing that has happened now is that it is no longer a four-horse race.

“It’s a three-horse race where not only the winners take the biscuit but there are two biscuits.

“So, it is two out of three and what an opportunity [for Ipswich].”

Ipswich Town will visit Carrow Road on Saturday to take on Norwich City in the East Anglian derby.
