Chelsea have touched base with Benfica to explore a deal to sign Portuguese defender Tomas Araujo, who is also a Paris Saint-Germain target.

The Blues are looking to bring in more new names before the end of the summer transfer window on Friday night.

Signing a striker is a priority but the club are open to market opportunities for the other areas of their squad as well.

According to French sports daily L’Equipe, Chelsea are in contact with Benfica to try and set up a deal for Araujo.

The 22-year-old defender is being heavily courted by French champions PSG who are keen to take him to Paris this summer.

They have offered a contract worth €5m to the player but are currently hamstrung by their inability to move on a centre-back.

PSG are planning to step up their efforts to sign the Portuguese once they move on a defender.

Chelsea are keen to take advantage of PSG’s situation and are now pushing to take Araujo to Stamford Bridge.

For the moment, Benfica are not keen to sell the centre-back at this late stage of the transfer window.
