Former EFL star Sam Parkin is of the view that Portsmouth did the right job by not forgetting last season’s achievements and offering their support to John Mousinho by giving him a new contract.

Portsmouth are back in the Championship after a 12-year hiatus, but they have had a difficult start to the season as they are yet to register a victory and are in 23rd place after six games.

Despite a tough start of life in the Championship, the Pompey hierarchy have extended Mousinho’s contract until 2028.

Parkin is confident that Portsmouth made the right decision by supporting Mousinho and offering him an extension.

He pointed out that the Portsmouth hierarchy’s faith in Mousinho shows that they have a long term plan in mind and he believes that the performances Pompey have shown under the 38-year-old tactician this season are impressive so far.

“Absolutely, continuity, the achievement of last year should not be forgotten and I think in the long term they are on to a good thing with John Mousinho, incredibly impressive”, Parkin said on What The EFL.

“You look at the performances this season away from home, maybe Leeds apart, where they probably should have been on the end of a hiding.

“I think they were unfortunate against Middlesbrough and certainly Burnley; I thought the game plan was really good.”

Portsmouth are set to take on Sheffield United at the weekend and it remains to be seen whether Mousinho’s side will be able to find their first win of their league campaign against the Blades.
