Benfica are set to disappoint Manchester United according to France Football. Reports today had indicated that the Premier League club were focused on a move for the Portuguese side’s winger Angel Di Maria, considering a cash plus Nani deal. However, Benfica are firmly opposed to allowing Di Maria to exit Lisbon in mid-season as they aim to win the Portuguese league and are involved in Europe.

Argentina international Di Maria has a buyout clause of €35M and it seems likely that given Benfica’s reluctance to sell Manchester United would need to pay this in full to secure his signature in January.

Also of interest is that Di Maria’s agent Jorge Mendes is believed to have indicated that his client will not move in January and when he does would favour a move to either Italy or Spain. Thus the obstacles for the English club to overcome are considerable.
