According to The Guardian, Bolton chairman Phil Gartside is aiming to persuade Burnley manager Owen Coyle to replace the recently sacked Gary Megson. It is understood that the appointment will be made before the Trotters visit Sunderland at the weekend.

Gartside is an admirer of the 43-year-old Scot whom he recommended for the Burnley job two years ago. Coyle has since led the The Clarets to their first return to top flight football in 33 years, making him a fan favourite among the club’s faithful.

Speculation further increased that the former Bolton player could be on his way to taking over at the Reebok Stadium when Coyle missed the post-match press conference after Burnley’s win over MK Dons in the FA Cup third round.
