With reports surfacing that Franck Ribery has refused to renew his contract with Bayern Munich, the world’s biggest football clubs have been placed on high alert. The highly-rated 26-year-old is contracted with the German giants until 2011, making a transfer this January or in the summer very likely, as his club will be keen to cash in while the opportunity still exists.

According to the Daily Mail, Premier League side Chelsea are lining up a massive £45M bid to sign the French winger, who is hugely admired by owner Roman Abramovich. With the club’s transfer ban temporarily lifted for the January window, the Blues will be working overtime to acquire Ribery before the month ends.

The tricky winger, once dubbed by Les Bleus legend Zinedine Zidane as the “jewel of French football” was acquired by Bayern for a then club-record €25M in 2007 from Ligue 1 side Marseille. He won the Bundesliga, the German Cup and was awarded German footballer of the year in a stellar 2008 campaign.
