West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has revealed his club are in pole position to capture Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy should the player decide to return to the Premier League. Competition from Bundesliga side Hamburg however, could scupper the deal having offered an amount believed to be much higher than that submitted by West Ham.

We know Spurs wanted him but we have offered far more money," Sullivan told Soccernet. "And even offering as much as we have done, we are still competing with one foreign club. It’s now down to us and a foreign club, and I believe we shall know in the next 72 hours, but they have a big advantage. But Van Nistelrooy wants to come back to the Premier League so we do have a fighting chance.”

Van Nistelrooy has had an injury-plagued stint at the Spanish capital, after moving from Manchester United, where he scored an astounding 150 goals in 219 appearances.
