Barcelona have confirmed on their official website that defender Eric Abidal will be out for six to eight weeks after suffering an injury during a training session. Club doctors revealed the French international has torn his left abductor muscle. Andres Iniesta and Gerard Pique left the team practice early as well, with both picking up minor knocks.

Manager Pep Guardiola is facing a crisis in defence ahead of his side’s trip to Atletico Madrid at the weekend. The Spanish tactician was already certain to be without Dani Alves, Yaya Toure, Gerard Pique and Rafael Marquez, but is now set to be without the reliable Abidal as well.

Abidal has made 26 appearances for the Catalan giants already this season, only eight shy of his total for last season.
