Ashley Cole is in danger of missing the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after fracturing his ankle in Chelsea’s 2-1 loss to Everton. The club have claimed that the defender could be out for approximately three months, giving the former Arsenal player, should he recover on time, less than a month to gain the proper fitness and sharpness to properly compete at a world-class level.

"We are very disappointed because [Cole] is a very important player for us,” manager Carlo Ancelotti said. "Now we have to do our best to get him recovered quickly, although we have Yury, who is a fantastic full-back, so we can use him."

Cole has been a mainstay in the Chelsea line-up since his transfer in 2006, and is equally highly regarded in the England setup. Should he fail to recover in time for the World Cup, it is believed Manchester City’s Wayne Bridge is being considered as a replacement.
