The African Footballer of the Year award is set to be announced in early March and Chelsea players Didier Drogba, and Michael Essien comprise two of the final three nominees in contention. Champions League foe Samuel Eto’o of Inter Milan is the third player in the running for the prestigious honour.
Drogba, winner of the award in 2006, has been in scintillating form in the first half of this season with already 23 goals in just 28 appearances, but is believed to be likely to miss out against Inter new-boy Eto’o, who found the back of the net 36 times last season, en route to winning all major trophies he competed in.
Essien, who has been in the top three in the past four years, is almost certain to miss out again. Barcelona midfielders Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure were the two players dropped from the final five nominees.
