Manchester City new-boy Patrick Vieira is set to face a spell on the sidelines after reluctantly accepting a Football Association charge for violent conduct in an incident involving Stoke’s Glenn Whelan.

There was no action taken by referee Alan Wiley during the match, but the FA have chosen to act, and Vieira has decided not to appeal. Speaking to his club’s official website, the Frenchman said, “At no time did I intend to injure Glenn Whelan. I apologised to him at the time, my foot did make contact with him, but I carried no malice at all toward him.”

The former Arsenal captain will likely be handed a three-match ban, and will miss crucial trips games against Liverpool, Chelsea, and the FA Cup replay against Stoke.
