Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident Paul Scholes can continue competing in the top flight of football despite being 35-years-old. Having already extended evergreen Ryan Giggs’ contract for another year, the Scottish tactician is hoping the mild-mannered midfield maestro will be following suit.

"I’d be happy to do that (extend his contract), but it all depends on what Paul thinks himself," Ferguson told the British press. "I’ve not spoken to him about it, but there’s no need for him to think of retiring as some of the media were saying a few weeks ago – another year wouldn’t be a problem for him.

Scholes has been in typically fine form for United in recent weeks, even scoring goals in the crucial matches against Manchester City in the Carling Cup and AC Milan in the Champions League.
