Everton found themselves overwhelmed by Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of their Europa League encounter, losing 3-0 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate. The Merseyside club were incapable of reproducing the type of performance that had them with the advantage going into the culminating match, leaving them out of Europe, and out of a chance of any silverware this season.

"We didn’t get to the levels we got to in recent weeks. The idea was to get a goal and get the tie finished but Sporting started well and we found it difficult,” manager David Moyes said in the club’s official website. "We knew the first 20 minutes would be difficult. There was pressure throughout and we never had enough of the ball to make anything happen.

Everton’s unfortunate exit from the tournament ends an impressive run of form that saw them defeat Premier League title contenders Chelsea and Manchester United.
