Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard heaped praise on his team-mates after successfully overcoming Romanian side Unirea Urziceni in the Europa League. Under difficult conditions, The Reds recovered from a goal down to finish off the tie and go through 4-1 on aggregate.
“We knew before the game it was going to be tough," Gerrard said to Liverpool’s official website. "Unirea aren’t a bad side and the conditions were horrendous out there. It was difficult to run and stop, but credit to the boys because we stuck in there. We went a goal down, but we showed good character to get back into it with a fantastic strike from Javier [Mascherano].”
Gerrard scored the last of the three goals scored by his club, making him the British player with the most European goals scored for an English club with 33, one more than previous holder Alan Shearer.
