Although Michael Owen will be out for the rest of the season for Manchester United, there is some good news to lift the gloom, with word that long-term injury victim Owen Hargreaves is getting ever closer to a return to first-team football. Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the former Bayern Munich midfielder will play for the reserves in midweek, positive signs that player’s fitness woes are behind him.

"Owen Hargreaves has shown for the first time this week that he’s almost ready to play," the United manager told reporters at a press conference. "We’ve pencilled him in for a Reserves game next Thursday and he’s been training with the first team, which has been good to see."

Hargreaves has yet to play for Man Utd since September of 2008 and has taken longer than expected to recover from operations to heal the tendonitis problems in his knees.
