Portugal have been given a boost with the news that Real Madrid defender Pepe has an 80% chance of being fit for the World Cup in South Africa. The defender’s doctor, who operated on him after his serious right-knee injury in December, declared himself optimistic about Pepe’s progress.
Dr Jose Carlos Noronha, the surgeon who operated on the Portuguese star told the Spanish press: "Everything suggests that he will be there [in South Africa]". Noronha also explained that Pepe himself is feeling good and "very optimistic about his recovery progress."
While Real Madrid opted not to bring in a big name defender in the January transfer window to replace Pepe, the Portuguese may have more competition for a first team spot next season with Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic thought to be a key Los Blancos transfer target.
