Alberto Aquilani was signed from AS Roma in the summer, presumably as a replacement to the outgoing Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid. The Italian however, was nursing an injury at the start of the season, and found it hard to break into the side when he returned to fitness. The Liverpool faithful are still very much behind him though, but manager Rafael Benitez has spoken out to limit the expectations of those that want to see the midfielder play more often.

"You have to decide if you can afford to give him two or three games when you know he’s maybe not at the level he could be, so you could end up losing some of them,” Benitez said in the club’s official website. "Alberto isn’t stupid. He knows the priority now has to be the team and what’s best for that. All he can do is keep training and making sure he is ready when we need him."

Aquilani has made just a handful of appearances for The Kop season, and with the race for fourth place tighter than ever, the untested Italian looks set to remain on the sidelines.
