Former international and French football icon Zinedine Zidane could soon be managing Algeria’s national team, if a report in the French newspaper Sud-Ouest is to be believed.

According to Bordeaux’s media source, Algeria’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika himself expressed a wish to see the retired World Cup winner lead the national side and has made a proposal to Zidane’s family during a meeting in Algiers last Wednesday.

Zidane, who is of Algerian descent and has citizenship with both France and Algeria, has not released a statement yet. President Bouteflika has been very keen for the former Real Madrid midfielder to play an integral part in the national squad for some time however, and would like to see him in a leading management position this year after the World Cup in South Africa has taken place, when current Algeria boss Rabah Saadane’s contract is due to expire.
