The future of Real Madrid boss Manuel Pellegrini is under threat following his side’s Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon. While the French were left to celebrate a 1-1 draw in the Bernabeu, which took them through 2-1 on aggregate, the Spanish giants were digesting the loss.

Coach Pellegrini told the press: "The first responsibility is mine, but we have to overcome this blow and keep fighting for the Liga title. It is a very big setback."

For Real Madrid, reaching the Champions League final due to be played in their own stadium, was the season’s highest priority. While the Madrid giants currently sit on top of the league table, ahead of Barcelona on goal difference, exiting Europe’s showpiece competition will be hard to take.

Pellegrini’s future should become more clear in the coming days, but a knee-jerk sacking cannot be ruled out, especially with a number of support groups now demanding it.
