Michael Essien may have missed out once again at a chance to be crowned African Player of the Year, but is far from bitter with team-mate Didier Drogba’s latest accolade. The prolific Chelsea striker was named the continent’s best footballer last night, beating out Inter Milan’s Samuel Eto’o.

Congratulations to Didier for winning this superb award. He has worked hard over the last year for Chelsea and Ivory Coast and he deserves every award he wins,” Essien said on the club’s official website. “I hope this is a sign of things to come in the upcoming Chelsea versus Inter Champions League game. For a Chelsea player to beat an Inter player Eto’o for the award could be a good omen ahead of the game.”

Although Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is still Europe’s top goal scorer with 30, Drogba isn’t far away, having bagged 25 already this season.
