Real Madrid set aside their Champions League heartbreak by hammering Real Valladolid 4-1 at the weekend, ensuring that they remain at the pinnacle of the La Liga standings. Midweek culprit Gonzalo Higuain, who was roundly criticised for his wasteful finishing against Lyon, was in sparkling form for Los Blancos as he notched an impressive hat-trick.
“Higuain was affected after Wednesday’s game and has shown his personality. I’m delighted for him because he was proven a point today,” Pellegrini said to Spanish paper Marca after the match. "Every day, the team is increasing its quality and the players show me every week that they deserve to be out there on the pitch.”
Cristiano Ronaldo was also on the score sheet as Real Madrid ensured Barcelona remain behind them on goal difference.
