Barcelona star Lionel Messi met his national team coach Diego Maradona in the Catalan capital yesterday to discuss the country’s plans for the forthcoming World Cup. Messi, who will be one of the main attractions at the tournament, attended the secret meeting in a Barcelona hotel, a meeting which lasted for two hours.

High on the agenda no doubt was Messi’s need to produce better performances for Argentina and Maradona’s strategy for helping him to do so. The former Napoli star has been criticised throughout his reign for not using the Barcelona wizard more effectively. The national team coach recognises that if Argentina are to have a real chance of lifting the World Cup then Messi must perform at the level he shows week in week out at the Camp Nou.
