Former Red Devil Gary Pallister, who, along with Steve Bruce, formed one of the strongest defensive partnerships in Manchester United history, believes the current duo of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, will be key to the club’s success this season. The pair have just recently been playing together again due to fitness issues, and have been a welcome boost of solidity at the back.

“It’s so important, the understanding that Rio and Nemanja have,” said Pallister on the club’s official website. “Together with Edwin van der Sar, they really gave us a base to work from last year, especially when we weren’t very prolific and we were winning a lot of games one-nil,” he explained. “That stability has been missing at times this season and we’ve looked more vulnerable. Fortunately, we have scored a lot of goals and that’s got us through games.

Man Utd have conceded just one goal since the pair renewed their partnership earlier in the month, a testament to just how much of an impact the two really are when healthy and playing alongside each other.
