James Milner’s chances of being included in the England squad in the coming World Cup were given a huge boost after manager Fabio Capello expressed his delight at the progress the young midfielder has shown this season. The former Newcastle man has proven to be a real solid performer for Aston Villa this year, and his commanding displays have not gone unnoticed by the England boss.

“Last year it was [Theo] Walcott – he was very important for us in the World Cup qualifiers. This year the player who has most improved has been Milner,” Capello said on the club’s official website. "He played three or four games with us and forms part of the national team."

Although Milner has recently been deployed with much success as a centre-midfielder for his club, he has been used primarily as a winger in the England setup.
