Chelsea returned to the pinnacle of the Premier League standings at the weekend, thanks in part to Joe Cole, who cheekily fired home The Blues’ opener. The crafty attacker has had trouble getting a run of games this season due to his fitness problems, but was impressive in the vital win over title rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford. Such was his performance that some are tipping him for a return to the England squad, an opportunity that the former West Ham United talent believes he may still have.

You can’t talk your way into the England squad,” Cole explained on the club’s official website, “but if I am playing regularly for a team fighting for the championship I will have every chance. But my main focus now is Chelsea. It is very important that this club gets back to the summit and I will fight every minute I can to win the league. I felt better on Saturday than I did last week and I am sure next week I will feel even better.

The opener at the weekend was Cole’s first goal in four months, and only his second so far this season.
