Boudewijn Zenden has not had it easy since his return to the Premier League from Olympique Marseille in the summer due to niggling injuries, but the former Liverpool and Chelsea man has impressed manager Steve Bruce enough to warrant an extension to his stay at Sunderland.

"Bolo is probably a bit disappointed he hasn’t started more. To be fair, when I was looking for him to start games, if I look back at the records, he picked up a couple of niggly injuries," Bruce said on the league’s official website. "That’s par for the course at his age and it meant I couldn’t play him, but he’s done very well and I like to have him involved.”

Bruce is particularly impressed with Zenden’s ability to help youngsters have a proper role model to follow, and is intent to ensure the veteran’s experience will be available at least for one more year.
