Real Madrid successfully cut down Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table back to three points, after defeating Almeria 2-1. Although the home side went ahead first, goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael van der Vaart ensured Los Blancos kept pace with the Catalan giants, just days after losing in El Clasico just a few days prior.

"We played well in many aspects. We managed to recover psychologically, which was very hard after the last match,” manager Manuel Pellegrini explained on the club’s official website. “Tonight we also were more elaborate in creating plays, as we had been in previous matches. We had six or seven clear chances, but [Diego] Alves had a great night."

Real next host Valencia at the weekend, in a massive match for Pellegrini’s title hopefuls.
