According to the league’s official website, Liverpool talisman Fernando Torres will miss the remainder of the season, after undergoing surgery on his troubling knee problem on Sunday. The procedure ensures the striker will not only miss the rest of the Premier League run-in, but also the club’s Europa League campaign, which gets underway again this week, with The Reds facing Atletico Madrid.

The surgery is believed to likely rule the 26-year-old out for around six weeks, meaning Spain manager Vicente del Bosque will be sweating on the fitness of Torres going into the World Cup.

Despite an injury-hit season, which has seen the Spanish international feature in a mere 24 matches, the former Atletico Madrid sensation has managed to notch an impressive 18 goals for Liverpool.
