Frank Lampard has followed in manager Carlo Ancelotti’s footsteps in defending John Terry, after the Chelsea skipper had a miserable match against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend. The England midfielder insists that although the centre-back deserved to be sent off, his support for the captain will not waver.
“He wants to win and he’s a fantastic captain,” claimed Lampard on the club’s official website, before admitting Terry’s second tackle gave the referee little choice. “Although for the first yellow I thought he got a slight touch on the ball. But when he went into that second tackle, you knew the minute the tackle went in he was going to get sent off.”
Terry’s red card means the former England captain will miss the club’s vital match at the weekend, when Chelsea face Stoke City at Stamford Bridge.
