Reports linking Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov with a move to AC Milan have been rubbished by sources close to the player and the Italian club. Calcio Mercato report that both parties were puzzled by the rumours of a move for the Bulgarian to the San Siro, and have moved to quash speculation.

While Berbatov has not enjoyed the best of campaigns at Old Trafford this season, it is understood the forward wishes to remain at the club. Furthermore, his salary of around £4M per season would indicate a move to a Milan side keen to cut costs would always have been unlikely.

In Serie A itself, managers and experts alike believe that Berbatov would be unsuited to the nature of the league and have ruled out the possibility of him heading to the San Siro.

Should the Bulgarian leave the Premier League a move back to the Bundesliga would appear the most obvious escape route.
