Liverpool have kept alive their ambitions to qualify for the Champions League next season, routing Burnley 4-0 to reduce the gap between them and fourth placed Tottenham to just two points – albeit having a played a game more. Captain Steven Gerrard twice found the back of the net, but it was Maxi Rodriguez whom he felt deserved extra praise, after the January acquisition scored his first goal for The Reds.

Maxi is a fantastic player," said Gerrard on the club’s official website."He’s got good movement and as a footballer it’s a pleasure to play with good players and that’s what Maxi is because he’s a fantastic player. He was really fresh and that showed in his performance and he took his goal really well.”

Rodriguez has been attracting nothing but praise since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window, prompting widespread disappointment from the Kop faithful that he is ineligible to play in the Europa League.
