The Japanese Football Association have confirmed that they will be pulling out of the race to host the 2018 World Cup, with president Motoaki Inukai citing, “We (JFA) were told European countries would be in a fierce tussle for 2018 and that aiming for 2022 would be the best choice.”

With Japan pulling out, England, along with European contingents Russia, Spain/Portgual, and Belgium/Netherlands are now seen as the leading candidates to host the World Cup after Brazil in 2014.

It is believed that the 2022 tournament will likely be staged in Asia, as Qatar and South Korea are the prime candidates to host the event, along with Japan, who have just confirmed plans to place their efforts on the same date.
