Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has dismissed suggestions that the club could sell Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard in the summer. Broughton answered fan questions for LFC TV and gave an assurance that the star duo will not be leaving Anfield.

There had been speculation linking Torres with a big money move to either Chelsea or Manchester City, and Gerrard with Internazionale or Real Madrid. This has only intensified following Liverpool posting a loss of £54.9M for the financial year up to 31st July 2009, 34% worse than last year’s loss of £40.1M, but Broughton is clear that star player sales are not needed.

"There’s absolutely no reason to sell either Torres or Gerrard", said Broughton. "I don’t want to sell either of them; Rafa [Benitez] doesn’t want to sell either of them. The club is not looking to sell either of those. We don’t need to do it to pay off the debt."

Broughton went on to pay tribute to Torres, describing the Spanish forward as "one of the great players."
