Gareth Barry’s hopes of participating in his first ever World Cup are looking grim after reports on France Football claim he will require three weeks to recover from his ankle injury. “It’s too long,” Fabio Capello said when asked about the Manchester City midfielder’s injury.

The former Aston Villa captain has become an outright regular in the England squad in recent times, and was fully expected to be part of the 23-man squad heading to the World Cup. A recent ankle injury suffered against Tottenham however, has seen his chances of travelling to South Africa turn very remote.

Barry played 38 matches for Man City this season, scoring three goals in the process. His late pull out of the England squad opens up an outside chance for Manchester United’s recently recovered Owen Hargreaves to make the line up.
