Rio Ferdinand has suffered a horrible 18-month spell with injuries this season, restricting him to just 12 starts in the Premier League. The newly appointed England captain has been included in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad though, and is fully expected to feature in the massive tournament in June.

"You get all different situations in your career and you’ve got to be able to deal with them,” Ferdinand explained on the club’s official website. “This is one of those stages I’ve been through and hopefully now I’m coming out the back end of it. Fingers crossed I won’t get any more injuries."

The 31-year-old has suffered from a start-stop 2009/10 season, raising questions whether John Terry’s replacement as England captain will be able to remain injury-free throughout the whole competition in South Africa.
