Striker Dirk Kuyt believes Liverpool need to finish in the Premier League’s top four next season in order to ensure the club remains attractive for the world’s top football talents. The Reds finished seventh in the standings this season, a far cry from almost winning the title in the previous campaign.

Liverpool is a massive club," Kuyt said on the club’s official website. "It’s very disappointing that we don’t have the Champions League because, up until last season, we had done so well in the competition. But this is what has happened. We have just got to make sure that we will be right back in it next year."

A prolonged absence from Europe’s biggest club tournament could cause players such as Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard to depart from the club, a predicament that would spell disaster for Liverpool’s future.
