Germany’s World Cup hopes have been dealt a big blow with the news that Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack will miss the tournament through injury. The 33-year-old suffered an ankle knock in Saturday’s FA Cup final win over Portsmouth and it is that knock which will see him miss South Africa.

Ballack has at times been crucial to the German team and his loss will be a huge blow to a side always involved in the latter stages of the world’s biggest footballing event.

A scan has shown that Ballack has a partially torn ligament that is expected to keep him out of action for at least eight weeks. At 33 years of age it is likely that South Africa would have represented Ballack’s last World Cup tournament.
