With only 11 hours left before the deadline of announcement of World Cup squads, the first big name to be left out of the prestigious tournament in June has come in the form of West Ham United striker Benni McCarthy.

Holder of his nation’s goal-scoring record with 31 in 79 matches for his country, the 32-year-old has been dramatically dropped from South Africa’s 23-man squad for the World Cup. The announcement will come as a bitter blow to the injury-stricken attacker, who will miss out on the special opportunity to play in front of his home fans in June.

The former Blackburn Rovers star struggled with injuries throughout last season, making just five appearances for the Hammers. His fitness issues, coupled with his inability to impress at training camp with his South Africa team-mates have ultimately led to his unfortunate dropping from the squad.
