Although Manchester City youngster Adam Johnson was backed by plenty of hype to make England’s 23-man squad for the World Cup, the talented winger was eventually part of the seven players that were dropped from the final roster. At 22 years of age though, and having just started playing in the Premier League, the former Middlesbrough star is determined to prove he deserves his place in the Three Lions.

"The England management made it clear to me that I have an international future,” Johnson said on the league’s official website. “And I am going to have a rest now and then get my head down and get ready to try and work my way into the side for the September qualifiers.”

Johnson will undoubtedly feel slightly aggrieved by his omission, having dislodged Shaun Wright-Phillips, who is part of England’s 23-man squad, from the Man City starting XI.
