Following the blow of losing Rio Ferdinand to injury and the resulting appointment of Steven Gerrard as England captain, the Three Lions have also announced that Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will take over the role of vice captain according to France Football.

Possibly a crucial appointment, especially given England’s injury curse as it has been dubbed, Lampard could well take over the armband at some point in the World Cup. Understandably the Chelsea midfielder is delighted with his appointment.

"I’m very proud", said Lampard. "Obviously I’m very disappointed for Rio [Ferdinand], his injury is a blow. I’ll try to give my best to be a good vice captain."

England begin their World Cup campaign against the United States and will be hoping injuries from now until the end of the tournament are kept to a minimum.
